The Kea ( Nestor notabilis) is rated as one of the most intelligent birds in the world, which helps it to survive New Zealand's harsh alpine environment. The bird has quickly adapted to the presence of humans, and can easily be viewed at campgrounds and holiday spots in the South Island, where you can watch it open rubbish bins ( that's Kiwi for trash cans) and tear off rubber car moldings, with its beak.
